Google Excels (at spreadsheets)

Google seems to be the bringer of all good things at the moment, they are rolling out another can’t-live-without-it application every month almost. One that has been around for a few months but which I’m using more and more is Google Spreadsheets. Here is a quick tour of what is on offer.

"There's no support available"

The old adages that “you never get fired for buying Windows and Intel” and “there’s no support for open-source software” just aren’t true; we tell you why.

Communities and Software

Open-source software and the communities that form with those projects are special places where you will find a wealth of information and resources relating to the software. From the outside it isn’t obvious how valuable an active community can be.

What Internet Explorer do YOU use?

I’ve been asked this question quite a few times1, as I do use browsers other than Microsoft’s best effort. Here I’m going to take the time to explain the main alternatives, how to start using them, and some reasons why you might want to change.

Markup Languages: Mediawiki

MediaWiki is very widely used due to the popularity of this wiki product. The most famous example of a MediaWiki is wikipedia, in fact the software was written specifically for the online encyclopedia and is still developed for it. The markup is designed to be easy to use for non-programmers and is relatively successful in this respect.

Markup Languages: Textile

Textile is the markup that is used with Textpattern. Like most markup its easy to use and get started with – there’s no need to study in advance!

Markup Languages: DokuWiki Markup

DokuWiki is a product that we at WoollyBlanket really like and would recommend to you if … well, we’d just recommend it to you anyway! We’ve got some more information if you’re interested.

Anyway, the markup! DokuWiki’s markup is easy to learn and simple to remember. Somehow, even though there aren’t many things you can’t do, the number of marks to learn is quite small. DokuWiki’s markup is quite instinctive as well, you put marks where you would if you were drawing some formatting ideas onto a page of printed words.
