Upgrading Squirrelmail
Sep 4, 20:19 by Lorna
There were two recent releases of Squirrelmail last month, mostly bugfixes rather than new features but since I use it to access all my email and there are security fixes included, I thought I’d update. I often reinstall the server more often than I get around to updating stuff so this is the first time I’ve really upgraded in a while.
The process was very simple. I unzipped the files as as I normally would and used the configuration tool to set up my email details and point to the directories outside the web root that hold the attachment data and so on. Squirrelmail comes with a page which does lots of different tests and checks to take a look at your setup and let you know if there are any obvious problems, so I used to configtest which correctly identified that I had a problem with the permissions on my data directory. After that, I logged in and was all set, all that was left was picking a theme from the new selection that came with the upgrade.
All in all I’m very impressed, there has clearly been a lot of time and effort put into making both installation and upgrade as painless as possible, which is as it should be. I’m happy with my new version even though there aren’t any major features included in this release. I use Squiirrelmail every day for my personal email, leaving it open in a panel in Opera and in small-screen mode, which renders really nicely.
