MediaWiki is very widely used due to the popularity of this wiki product. The most famous example of a MediaWiki is wikipedia, in fact the software was written specifically for the online encyclopedia and is still developed for it. The markup is designed to be easy to use for non-programmers and is relatively successful in this respect.
